More than half of Ahmedabad's dentists don't have a website
Right, so — here's what I did.
I built a custom scraper. Pointed it at Google Maps. Asked one question: "Show me every dentist in Ahmedabad."
It pulled 200 listings.
Then I cleaned the data. Removed the eye hospitals, the hair transplant clinics, the dental supply stores, the software company that somehow showed up. 186 real dental clinics remained.
For each one, I checked one simple thing: what's in the "website" field on Google Maps?
Here's the breakdown:
| What was in the website field | Count | What it actually is |
|---|---|---|
| Real domain | 72 | An actual website on their own domain |
| Social media | 4 | A Facebook or Instagram profile |
| Free blog | 3 | Blogspot or WordPress.com page |
| Broken / Drive link | 1 | Dead URL or Google Drive link |
| Empty | 106 | Nothing |
Read those numbers again.
106 dentists out of 186 — that's 57% — have NOTHING in the website field. Not a real website. Not a Facebook page. Not even a Practo link. Just empty.
Another 8 dentists listed something that's not really a website. A Facebook profile. A Blogspot page. One clinic had a Google Drive link in there.
Add those up:
61% of Ahmedabad's dentists have no real digital home.
You know what "invisible" looks like in 2026?
It's not that patients can't find you. It's that the AI helping them choose doesn't even know you exist.
The "with website" number is misleading. Here's what it really shows.
Now here's where it gets interesting.
That 39% with "real websites"? It's not what you think.
Of the 72 dentists with a proper domain website:
- 20 are listings of just 6 multi-location dental chains — Sabka Dentist, Clove Dental, Shri Ganesh Dental, and three others. They all share a single corporate website.
- Only 52 are independent local dentists with their own website.
Pull out the math.
52 of 186 = 28%.
Only 28% of Ahmedabad's dental clinics are independents with their own digital home.
The other 72% are either chain branches, or have no real website at all.
The problem is?
If you're an independent dentist in Ahmedabad, you're competing on two fronts you didn't sign up for:
- Six national chains who all share one optimised corporate website. One website. Ranking for everything.
- 134 fellow independents that AI engines simply cannot see.
The chain dentist isn't the threat.
The AI not knowing you exist — that's the threat.
Same rating. Six times the patient reach. The gap isn't quality — it's visibility.
Here's the part that hit me.
I looked at the average star rating and review count for each group:
| Avg Star Rating | Avg Review Count | |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics WITH a real website | 4.86★ | 314 |
| Clinics with NO website | 4.79★ | 51 |
Same rating.
Six times the review count.
You know what that means?
Same quality of care. Six times the patient flow being captured.
And reviews compound. Patients write reviews. AI engines read those reviews. AI weighs reviews. More patients show up.
You know what's heartbreaking?
A dentist in Vatva is delivering 4.8-star care to 50 patients. A clinic in Bodakdev is delivering 4.8-star care to 314 patients.
Same skill.
Same rating.
Six times the impact.
The only difference? The Bodakdev clinic shows up when patients search.
Patients aren't searching the way you think they are
Let me ask you something.
When was the last time YOU asked Google a simple question?
Like — when did you last type "best dentist near me" into a search bar?
Probably a while ago.
Now think about what you DO instead.
You ask ChatGPT. You ask Gemini. You speak into your phone — "Hey, my tooth is hurting on the lower right side. Where should I go in Paldi?"
That's how patients are searching now.
And here's the thing AI engines do that Google Maps doesn't:
They don't just list clinics.
They recommend one or two.
The problem is?
AI engines can't crawl your Google Maps listing the way Google can. They need a real website. With proper schema markup. With clear authority signals.
Two years ago, a dentist needed to be findable on Google Maps.
Today, they need to be readable by ChatGPT.
Same job. Different language.
Most clinics are still speaking the old one.
This isn't about building a fancy website.
It's about being one of the 28% the AI knows exists when your future patient asks.
How I collected this data
Full transparency. Trust matters.
Tool: Custom scraper I wrote from Gandhinagar.
Date collected: 16 April 2026.
Query: "dentists Ahmedabad India" via Google Maps.
Raw output: 200 listings.
Cleaned dataset: 186 dental clinics. I removed 14 non-dental entries — eye hospitals, plastic surgeons, dental supply stores (B2B, not clinics), one software company that Google Maps mis-categorised, even a photography studio called "Smile Studio." Full list of removed entries is in my data sheet — message me on WhatsApp if you want it.
How I classified URLs:
- Real domain = clinic's own website at their own domain (drsharmadental.com, smileclinic.in)
- Social media = Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn URL listed as "website"
- Free blog = Blogspot, WordPress.com, Wix free tier
- Broken = Google Drive link, dead URL
- None = empty website field on Google Maps
Limitations — what this data is NOT:
- Not a random sample. The scraper pulled what Google Maps surfaced for the query. Concentrated in central Ahmedabad zones — Maninagar, Ambawadi, Paldi.
- Not a complete census. Ahmedabad has 1,500+ dental clinics by most estimates. This audit checked 186.
- "No website on Google Maps" doesn't mean no website exists anywhere. Some clinics may have a website that isn't linked from their Maps listing. I'm reporting what's visible to Google Maps users — and to AI engines that read Google Maps as a source.
- AI citability isn't directly tested in THIS dataset. That's a separate, deeper audit on a smaller stratified sample. Planned. Coming next month.
The numbers I've shared are real, replicable, and defensible.
Three things every Ahmedabad dentist should do this month
If you read this far, here's what to actually DO.
1. Get a real website on your own domain.
Not a Practo profile. Not a Facebook page. Not a blogspot.
Your own domain.
Even a single page is better than nothing. The cost? Maybe ₹1,000–2,000 a year for the domain. Hosting can be free.
2. Add structured schema markup.
This is the "secret code" that tells AI engines you're a dentist, where you practise, what you offer, your hours, your contact.
Most websites don't have it.
Most agencies don't add it.
It's the single biggest leverage point in AI citability. Free to add if you know what you're doing.
3. Answer patient questions on your website.
Not "About Us." Not "Our Mission."
Questions.
- "Do you do root canal under sedation?"
- "Do you accept walk-in emergencies?"
- "How much does a teeth cleaning cost?"
- "Do you treat children?"
This is what patients ask AI engines. If your website answers those exact questions, AI engines can cite you.
If your website talks about "world-class dentistry" — AI ignores you.
